Video Competition Rules
The aim of the video competition is to give students an opportunity to explore science and the world around them in creative and practical ways. Taking part helps students develop creativity, research skills, critical thinking, digital skills and self-expression.
Students can present their ideas through a short video, experiment, story, interview, animation or another suitable video format.
Video enthusiasts aged 7–19 are invited to participate.
Organisers: the Culture Department of Narva City Government and Narva Laste Loomemaja.
Competition Themes and Age Groups
Grades 1–3
“A Day in the Life of a Pet”
A young scientist observes their own pet or a friend’s pet and comments on its behaviour from a “biology” perspective in a fun way. The video may be humorous, educational or story-based.
Grades 4–6
“A Day Without…”
The student films their amusing attempts to spend an entire day without, for example, a phone, electricity, plastic or the internet. The video should show how the absence of the chosen thing affects everyday life and what new solutions or discoveries the student finds along the way.
Grades 7–9
“Human or Machine — Who Is Smarter?”
The student films a humorous experiment to find out whether a human or a machine, including artificial intelligence, is more resourceful at an everyday task. It could be cooking, cleaning, drawing or a completely unexpected challenge. The video should preferably include examples, tests, comparisons or a small experiment.
Grades 10–12
“Is the Future Green?”
The student films a short, creative story about what our lives might be like in the future if environmental care and technology go hand in hand. Possible topics include climate, energy, transport, consumption and waste. The video should include arguments, examples or research, as well as the student’s own views and conclusions.
Participation Rules
- School students may participate in the age group corresponding to their grade.
- Each participant may submit one video in one age group.
- The video must be created by the student.
- Any music, images, video clips or other materials used must either be created by the student or permitted for use.
- When filming other people, participants must respect their consent and privacy.
- The video may be in Estonian, Russian or English. Estonian subtitles may be added if desired.
- By submitting a video, the author grants the organisers the right to use it when announcing the competition results and promoting Science Week.
Technical Requirements
- Maximum length: 3 minutes.
- The video may be filmed with a phone, tablet or camera.
- Recommended format: MP4.
- The video must be filmed horizontally.
- The quality must allow viewers to understand what is happening and hear speech and other sounds.
- Special effects are allowed, but they should not overshadow the content.
Judging Criteria
The jury will assess the videos based on how well they address the theme, the quality of their content, scientific thinking and research, creativity and originality, and the clarity and structure of the idea.
For younger students, the jury will focus primarily on the idea, relevance to the theme, creativity and the student’s own contribution. Professional technical quality is not required.
Jury and Prizes
Entries will be assessed by a jury appointed by the organisers.
The jury may award first, second and third place in each age group. It may also decide not to award a particular prize or to award several special prizes.
Submitting Your Video
Videos must be submitted by 12 October. Entries sent on 13 October will not be reviewed.
Send a link to your video (Google Drive, OneDrive, YouTube or a similar service) to teadusnadal.videokonkurss@gmail.com
Please include:
- the student’s name;
- grade;
- video title;
- contact details (phone number and email address);
- an optional brief description of the video idea.
Announcement of Results
The competition results will be announced during Science Week on 21 October at 17:00 in the Winter Garden of Narva Laste Loomemaja.
With the author’s consent, the best videos may be shown at a Narva Laste Loomemaja event or published on its website or social media channels.
